Black pepper | Gammiris Ata | 100g | 250g | 500g|
Hailing as the king of spices, pepper is one of the most widely consumed spices in the world, with Sri Lanka producing and exporting black pepper.
Ceylon pepper is especially popular all over the world as it is rich in piperine, an alkaloid that gives it a clear sharpness. Due to this, the price of Ceylon pepper obtained from Sri Lanka is high in the international spice market. Black pepper is widely used as a ‘hot’ cooking spice and seasoning.
Black pepper is a hot spice according to Ayurveda. It was administered to patients suffering from diarrhea, constipation, arthritis, insect bites and diseases of the lungs and cardiovascular system. It also stimulates appetite and digestion, and is good as a decongestant for a stuffy nose. Piperine is often used in combination with other spices as it enhances the bioavailability of many nutrients (such as selenium, beta-carotene, curcumin and vitamins A and C). This is why it is always recommended to prepare turmeric and add black peppercorns to dishes to better absorb curcumin.
